Sand tray therapy uses a familiar medium to recreate a child’s world after abuse, extreme neglect, or trauma. As in play therapy, the sand tray allows the user to verbalize his or her emotional state in a safe and comforting way. While it is primarily used with children, adults who have been unable to verbalize their emotional state related to trauma through other conventional forms of therapy find the sand to be a non-threatening, non-violent expressive medium in which to process the trauma without retribution. This therapy is also beneficial for young adults, couples, and families.
Sand tray therapy uses a variety of miniature toys, figurines, and objects to facilitate change on a fictitious level through metaphor. Through this activity, the child or adult gains the courage and ability to recognize that these same changes can be made in his or her life.
I have advanced training in sand tray therapy and will facilitate, encourage, support, and guide you through this process to explore your/your child’s world while recognizing insightful elements.
